Description
"OH MOTHER OF GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOWCH!" Rebound exclaimed as she slid down the narrow chimney and landed flat on her bottom. Normally such a fall wouldn't have phased her, but she had been unprepared for such an abrupt landing.
"Keep it down! You're going to wake up the whole house!" Aliya hushed at her.
Rebound merely nursed her sore bottom in silence, and set about to her work. With Santa currently out of it, it was up to herself and the genie girl to finish off his route for the night. The elves assured her that thanks to modern advances in sleigh technology, all they'd have to do is follow the predesignated flight path and deliver the toys to each house they visited. A task simple enough that even a child could do it. Of course, that didn't take into account the hazards and tribulations involved with sliding down chimneys, getting back up chimneys, avoiding "traps" set by precocious children planning on catching Santa, among other things. If not for Aliya's magic and ability to turn into smoke, Rebound wasn't even sure how they'd even manage the locals that didn't have chimneys.
"Just tell me again why you can't just use your genie magic to zap all these presents to the right kids and be done with it?" Rebound grumbled as she rummaged through the large sack of toys, and pulled out a large, wrapped box marked to some kid named Maria.
"Because, all the Yuletide energy in the air tonight fritzes with my magic!" Aliya sighed, having repeated the same explanation at least 20 times already. "That means I can only do minor, every day genie stuff. Besides you aren't my master so I can't grant you wishes!"
"Fine," Rebound pouted. "Let's just finish up here and move on."
Carefully the two of them placed each of the wrapped gifts under the tree and in the stockings hung over the fireplace. It was difficult to see in the dim light, but they had to manage somehow. There were strict instructions on how to go about their business, as it was imperative that they made absolutely sure it seemed as though Santa himself had been to each and every house they visited that night. That meant they couldn't alert anyone in the house to their presence or even risk turning on a light to see better, and aside from leaving the presents behind they weren't allowed to displace or move any object in the houses.
Well, save for one other thing. Sitting on a small table in the center of the room was a small plate of cookies with a glass of milk sitting next to it. The traditional snack left for Santa. Rebound picked one off the plate and bit into it. So far this had been the one redeeming aspect of the job that night, and after some 20 houses on their route, Rebound was now making sure she and Aliya cleared that plate of cookies before they left.
"So much for my holiday diet," she thought to herself.
"All right, this house is done. Let's get out of here and keep going!" Aliya whispered.
"Okay," Rebound nodded. "Only this time, don't forget to help me up the chimney, okay?"
